Firearms possessing no “WP” proof within the receiver but have affixed barrels with “WP” evidence mark, As well as the “Oval P” would signify that when it really is an more mature receiver, the barrel was replaced soon after 1905 by a person outdoors the Winchester mend shop. (In combination with verification by other barrel markings)
Receivers without the “WP” evidence but have barrels Together with the “WP” evidence slide into that period from 1905-1908 where the barrel may well hold the “WP” evidence nevertheless the receiver will not.

I believe in part, but probably not The full operate or strategy with utilizing the WP stamp, was that it was somewhat of the marketing and advertising marketing campaign. What's more, it almost certainly helped Along with the copyright concerns that the organization was addressing at time.

When there are actually some plausible theories presented right here and elsewhere we may perhaps never know the answer to the first concern about the receiver with both of those marks proven inside a previous article. Depending on other substitute barrels I have noticed which contain equally the WP and mail buy P and a statement from the previous Winchester staff that indicated they DID use some mail get parts when rebarreling rifles returned for company I suspect that it's a substitute Gun parts receiver which was put in and proofed at Winchester along with the mail order proof was also added to simply indicate it was not the original receiver. That is certainly just my opinion/guess. Hope that assists.

On the best of my expertise, when you find a pre-1905 Winchester having a “WP” evidence about the barrel, but not about the receiver, anyone other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
